Guatemala authorities rescue minors from extremist orthodox Jewish group following abuse allegations

The Public Prosecutor’s office in Guatemala conducted an operation at the compound of Lev Tahor, an extremist Jewish sect, on Friday. Following reports of abuse within the group, the authorities performed a search and seizure, taking at least 40 women and 160 minors into protective custody. Authorities also discovered at least one skeleton of a minor.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini was acquitted by a Sicilian court Friday on charges of kidnapping and dereliction of duty over his refusal to allow a boat carrying migrants to dock in Italy. The prosecution’s request for a six-year prison sentence and civil claims for over one million euros in damages was ruled unfounded. In 2019, while Minister of the Interior, Salvini prevented a vessel from the Spanish NGO Open Arms from docking on the Italian island of Lampedusa.

UN reports massacre committed by criminal gang in Haiti

The UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on Monday issued an investigation report on a massacre carried out by the Wharf Jrmie criminal gang in the municipality of Port-au-Prince of Haiti between December 6 and 11. They noted at least 207 people (134 men and 73 women) were executed by gang members.
