Boynton’s victory inspired civil rights activists, known as the Freedom Riders, to travel on interstate buses in the South to test the Supreme Court’s ruling. And I had their ear, explaining Supreme Court decisions on a regular basis over many years. Among the Freedom Riders was Congressman John Lewis, who also died this year.
