Australian Federal MPs voted Wednesday in favour of a motion supporting the return of Wikileaks’ founder Jullian Assange to Australia, ahead of a US extradition hearing next week in London’s High Court of Justice. A former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informant was charged Thursday for falsifying reports that US President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, each received $5 million in bribes from a Ukrainian energy company. According to the indictment, Alexander Smirnov reported to an FBI Agent in March 2017 that he had been in contact with the owner of the Ukrainian company, Burisma Holdings Ltd., seeking to acquire a U.S. company and make an offering on the U.S.

ACLU files lawsuit over Virginia guidelines for transgender students

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Virginia filed two lawsuits Thursday against the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) on behalf of two transgender students challenging the department’s 2023 model policies. Virginia law authorizes VDOE to issue model policies regarding the treatment of transgender students, and the policies are required to reflect “evidence-based best practices” for the inclusion of trans students in public schools.

Russia enacts law permitting confiscation of property for ‘disseminating fake news’

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law Wednesday calling for confiscation of property for those who commit crimes “detrimental to national security” and those who disseminate fake news about Russia’s military according to TASS. Russian lawmakers previously passed the bill through the Duma in January. With Putin’s signature, the bill has now become law.

The Paris court of appeal lightened a one-year prison sentence for former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Sarkozy was facing charges over alleged illegal campaign financing in his 2012 re-election campaign. The court also on affirmed a lower court’s guilty verdict. Vincent Desry, the former president’s attorney, claimed in a press interview Wednesday that Sarkozy was innocent of all charges against him and intended to file a further appeal of the sentence.
