A United Nations report published Friday indicated that the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s attire and its requirement that women have a male guardian are limiting Afghan women’s freedom of movement and access to education, employment, health care and other basic rights. The report states that many Afghan women are not leaving their homes alone due to decrees issued by the Taliban, who took control of Afghanistan in August 2021.

The UK Central Criminal Court handed down its sentence Friday in the landmark female genital mutilation (FGM) case against defendant Amina Noor for carrying out an FGM procedure on a UK citizen oversees, sentencing Noor to 7 years imprisonment. The victim of the crime, under the alias of Jade for her protection, was three years old when Noor took her to Kenya where she was subjected to FGM.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court announced Friday that it will hear an appeal from Derek Lee, a man convicted of second-degree murder who is challenging the state’s law requiring mandatory life prison sentences for those found guilty of the offense who did not intend to kill. The court granted Lee’s petition for an appeal on the issues of whether Lee’s mandatory life sentence violates Article I §13 of the Pennsylvania Constitution and the Eighth Amendment of the US Constitution.

US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito granted a stay order Friday to appellants contesting the terms of a $2.46 billion settlement between sexual abuse victims and the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). BSA declared bankruptcy in 2020 amid thousands of lawsuits for sexual abuse against Scout Leaders. A settlement was approved by a bankruptcy judge in September of 2022 and upheld by a federal court in March of the following year.
