Myanmar’s military, known as the Tatmadaw, announced Saturday the enforcement of the People’s Military Service Law , which requires all men between the ages of 18 and 35 and women between the ages of 18 and 27 serve in the military for a minimum of two years. The activation of the People’s Military Service Law follows a series of defeats for the military junta in recent months.

Thomson Reuters is shutting down its Firm Central law practice management software and will discontinue support for the product after Sept. 30, 2024. Thomson Reuters launched Firm Central in 2013 at a media event in its then-headquarters in Eagan, Minn., as its answer to a then-growing crop of cloud-based practice management software such as Clio, which launched in 2008 , MyCase, which launched in 2010, and LexisNexis Firm Manager, which LexisNexis launched in 2011 and then shut down in 2017.

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee published a 76 page report Thursday detailing “widespread concerns about the accountability of regulators” and suggesting the formation of a new independent statutory Office for Regulatory Performance. The report, titled “Who watches the watchdogs?,” discusses the implications that Brexit has had on independent regulators.

The Panamanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Friday that it denied the request from the Nicaraguan government to provide safe passage for ex-president Ricardo Martinelli to leave the country after the Nicaraguan government granted asylum to the former Panamanian leader on Wednesday. Human Rights Watch (HRW), SITY Research and Truth Hounds released a report Thursday on the Russian military assault on the Ukrainian city of Mariupol between February and May 2022, alleging numerous civilian casualties, with some resulting from potentially illegal attacks and hundreds of thousands left without essential services for weeks. According to the report, in February 2022, Russia initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, targeting the city of Mariupol.

UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General Bintou Keita in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) condemned a series of attacks targeting UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) personnel in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday that it discovered a tunnel in Gaza linking two buildings belonging to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinians in the Near East (UNWRA). The IDF claims that the tunnel was used by “terrorist[s]” in the ongoing war with Hamas. The 700-meter tunnel was discovered between a UNWRA school and the agency’s headquarters in Gaza City.
