US appeals court orders return of books to Texas public library after book ban

The United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit affirmed Thursday a District Court’s ruling to return books to a Texas public library after they were removed because of their viewpoint and content. This was a partial victory for the plaintiffs, as eight of the 17 banned books are to be returned to shelves. The Llano County Library in Texas removed 17 books in 2021 after the library received complaints about the books being too sexual to be in the children’s section.

Amnesty International (Amnesty) called on Thursday for the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) de facto authorities to withdraw their forces from the Yemeni Women’s Union Center, which is the only women’s shelter in Aden. The STC took over the center in an attack on May 26. According to the human rights group, armed men, accompanied by women associated with the STC-backed Southern Women Union, forcibly entered the Yemeni Women’s Union center building in Aden.
