The International Bar Association (IBA) adopted a resolution for the creation of a Special Tribunal on Saturday for Russia to try crimes of aggression in Ukraine. The IBA resolutions condemns Russia’s war of aggression, affirms the IBA’s support for Ukrainian sovereignty and urges UN member states to establish and international criminal tribunal for Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

On Friday, police in the northern Kosovo city of Zvecan fired tear gas at protests opposing the appointment of ethnic-Albanian mayors. The action injured 10 people as local Serbs gathered in front of the Zvecan municipal administration building, according to Serbian state TV. Footage also reported a police vehicle set on fire and the use of flash bangs and automatic weapons.

Somali officials announced Sunday that the country would institute a direct one-person-one-vote democracy by 2024. This comes after years of attempts to achieve direct universal suffrage, first passed by the Somali legislature in 2019, which have fallen apart due to political division and internal conflict. Japan’s government announced new sanctions Friday against Russia for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine and recent agreement to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus. The sanctions include measures meant to freeze the assets of 17 Russian individuals and 78 entities. According to a statement from the Japanese Foreign Ministry, the sanctioned individuals are “considered to be directly involved in” Russia’s “annexation” of portions of Ukraine.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law on Friday that limits educational instruction related to sexual orientation and gender identity for students through sixth grade. Senate File 496 focuses on education in Iowa, restricting the topics teachers may speak about, as well as removing all books that include “depictions of a sex act” from schools.

In a recent decision, the Dubai Supreme Court (DSC) confirmed that enforcing foreign judgments in the Emirate could be particularly challenging. In this case, the DSC ruled against the enforcement of an English judgment on the ground that the case had already been decided by Dubai courts by a judgment that became final and conclusive ( DSC, Appeal No. 419/2023 of 17 May 2023 ).

Two years ago, I wrote columns about companies pouring money into Black Lives Matter to establish their bona fides as “antiracist” corporations. The money continued to flow despite serious questions raised about BLM’s management and accounting. The Texas House of Representatives voted Saturday to impeach Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton by a vote of 121 to 23. Paxton will now face a trial in the Texas Senate, where Paxton’s wife is a member, and has been suspended from office pending the upcoming trial, pursuant to Texas law. Paxton responded to the impeachment vote, saying : The ugly spectacle in the Texas House today confirmed the outrageous impeachment plot against me was never meant to be fair or just.
