Seanad Éireann (the Irish legislature) passed a bill to establish specialized family law court divisions on Thursday, aiming to make an efficient and user-friendly family justice system. The Family Courts Bill 2022 establishes the Family District Court, Family Circuit Court and Family High Court, as dedicated divisions within the existing District, Circuit and High courts.

Kenya’s National Assembly nominated Professor Kithure Kithiki to fill the vacancy in the Office of the Deputy President on Friday. However, this nomination came only hours after the Senate voted to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office, resulting in the High Court at Kerugoya issuing orders temporarily barring Kithiki from assuming his role until October 24.

The Supreme Court of India upheld Thursday Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, which grants Indian citizenship to immigrants from outside India who entered the Indian state of Assam before March 25, 1971. In a 4-1 majority decision, the court emphasized that this provision is consistent with the principle of fraternity and does not violate any constitutional articles.

19 international civil society organizations issued a statement Friday demanding due process guarantees at a key hearing for Guatemalan journalist Jose Rubén Zamora. The hearing is scheduled for October 18. The organizations, including Amnesty International, ARTICLE 19, and the Committee to Protect Journalists, expressed deep concern over alleged human rights violations and threats to judicial independence in Zamora’s case.

The Supreme Court of India began to hear a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the exception given to marital rape from criminal sanction on Thursday. The challenge pertains to Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860, which has been replaced by Section 63 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. The Supreme Court of Canada, in a 5-4 majority, ruled on Friday that judges do not have the discretion to impose a driving prohibition order when an offender is convicted of criminal negligence causing death or bodily harm under section 220 or 221 of the Criminal Code. Writing for the majority, Justice Martin contended that criminal negligence causing death or bodily harm is not an offense enumerated under the driving prohibition provisions.
