Pakistan court convicts former PM Khan and wife of unlawful marriage

A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to seven years in prison for violating a marriage law when they wed in 2018, officials and a lawyer for the couple said. The prosecution asserted Khan and his wife violated Islamic law, which says that a woman must wait three months before re-marrying.

Argentina Chamber of Deputies passes omnibus reform bill

The Chamber of Deputies of Argentina, which is the lower chamber of the country’s legislature, passed on Friday an omnibus bill titled “Bases and Starting Points for the Liberty of Argentines” that included a number of reforms and was proposed by libertarian President Javier Milei. The bill passed with a majority vote of 144 in favor and 109 against, following a debate that began Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court will hear the four oral arguments on its February calendar. The arguments will be live streamed. Opinions in the cases should file by May 6. Because of the oral arguments, the court will not be conferencing (also here ) this week and there will be a double conference next week.

Shellyne Rodriguez, the machete-wielding former Hunter College professor, has now been fired by the Cooper Union college. The school previously stood with Rodriguez after she trashed a student display and held a machete to the neck of a journalist. It appears that Rodriguez’s anti-Israel comments were finally too much for Cooper Union. What is interesting is what it takes at both Hunter College and The Cooper Union to be fired.

Federal judge overseeing Trump election interference case indefinitely postpones trial start date

A DC federal judge indefinitely postponed the trial date in former US President Donald Trump’s 2020 election interference case. US District Judge Tanya Chutkan vacated the trial date, originally set for March 4, since both parties are still awaiting a decision from the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit on Trump’s claim of immunity. Chutkan previously stayed any further court filings in the case for the same reason.
