On Friday, New Mexico District Judge Fred T. Van Soelen rejected a Republican challenge to the state’s congressional map that argued the map favors Democratic candidates. The case was in the New Mexico County of Lea Fifth Judicial District Court. Soelen concluded that the congressional map does not violate Article II, Section 18 of the New Mexico Constitution.

Palmer — On Friday, October 6, 2023, DEA announced a second extension of telemedicine flexibilities concerning the prescribing of controlled substances, which were originally set to expire after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic emergency. As a reminder, back in February 2023, HPM blogged about DEA’s two proposed rules for prescribing (1) controlled substances generally and (2) for buprenorphine use in opioid treatment.

In academia, one of the most common criticisms in research and discussions is that correlation does not mean causation. It refers to the logical fallacy for some who draw a cause-and-effect relationship between two events. The logical fallacy is captured in the Latin phrase cum hoc ergo propter hoc (‘with this, therefore because of this’).

A federal judge allowed Oklahoma’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors to take effect on Thursday. In the opinion , Judge John Heil, III stated that the plaintiffs asking for injunctive relief “failed to show a likelihood of success on the merits” of their multiple constitutional claims. The plaintiffs challenged the law, SB 613 , on several constitutional grounds.

We have been following the gradual elimination of common terms deemed offensive or microaggressive. The latest is the word “picnic.” After the University of Nevada Las Vegas law school’s Environmental Law Society announced a picnic, it was renamed “Lunch by the Lake” due to “diversity and inclusion” concerns. The ELS was able to avoid a second correction with a “Lunch in the Field” since “field” has also been found to be offensive at other schools.

As of early Sunday morning, Israel has confirmed over 600 deaths, 2,000+ injured , an estimated 100+ kidnapped, and hundreds more missing following Saturday’s surprise attack by Hamas. Hamas launched over 4,000 rockets into Israel, in a surprise attack already being likened to the attack that started the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
