US federal appeals court strikes down ATF ‘ghost gun’ rule

The US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled on Thursday that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ( ATF) lacked authority to adopt a final rule aimed at limiting “ghost guns,” weapons parts kits that can be put together to create a firearm without having to register it. The case is an appeal from the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

A federal jury in Maryland convicted Baltimore’s former top prosecutor Marilyn Mosby on Thursday on perjury charges. The jury found Mosby was guilty of falsifying financial duress claims in order to withdraw funds from a retirement fund. A jury in the US District Court of Maryland convicted Mosby on two federal perjury counts after she falsely claimed financial hardship from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maryland to pay $235K to family of Black teen after fatal police encounter

Maryland’s Board of Public Works unanimously approved on Wednesday a settlement ending a lawsuit against the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the aftermath of a fatal police encounter that resulted in the death of Anton Black’s death five years ago. The resolution grants $100,000 to Black’s family and estate, with an additional $135,000 to pay the lawyers representing the Coalition for Justice for Anton Black.
