Police arrested environmental activist Captain Paul Watson on his ship Sunday in the town of Nuuk, Greenland. Watson is a prominent campaigner against commercial whaling. When he was arrested, Watson was apparently engaged in a mission to traverse the Northwest Passage, a series of waterways through the arctic archipelago of Canada that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

I have long been critical of the erosion of free speech in Italy and other Western European countries, including the use of criminal libel laws against critics of the police or government. This week a Milan court has ordered a journalist to pay Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni damages of 5,000 euros ($5,465) for making fun of her in a social media post.

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County experienced a ransomware attack on Friday, leading to the shutdown of the court’s internal computer systems. The systems will remain offline through the weekend as efforts to address the issue continue. Upon detecting the ransomware attack, the Superior Court disabled its network systems to prevent further damage.

The Mercury News is reporting that former Supreme Court Justice Edward Panelli has died. The report includes an extended obituary that begins, “Justice Edward Panelli, who rose from a hardscrabble childhood in Depression-era Santa Clara Valley to the state’s highest court, died Saturday evening in Saratoga at the age of 92.” Justice Panelli was appointed by Governor George Deukmejian and served on the court from December 1985 until January 1994.

Ukraine Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced Friday that Iryna Farion, a former nationalist politician known for her staunch advocacy of Ukrainian language use over Russian, was fatally shot in Lviv. In a statement released via Telegram, Klymenko indicated that investigators are considering several theories, including personal animosity and Farion’s sociopolitical activities, while not ruling out the possibility of a contract killing.

The French region of La Rochelle witnessed clashes between protesters and police on Saturday, amidst demonstrations against new irrigation reservoirs being built. The protests, attended by around 2,000 people, turned turbulent when police intervened, responding with tear gas as some protesters threw objects. Both the police officers as well as the demonstrators reported minor injuries.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a new bill into law on Sunday amending the pension system in South Africa. The Pension Funds Amendment Bill enables the implementation of the new two-pot system “geared towards bolstering retirement savings.” The bill amends the Pension Funds Act, the Post and Telecommunications-Related Matters Act, the Transnet Pension Fund Act and the Government Employees Pension Law to implement this new pension system.

The government of the Philippines issued a statement on Sunday announcing that the state and China have reached an agreement regarding the Philippines’ routine rotation and resupply missions to a breached ship located in the disputed South China Sea. The ship, BRP Sierra Madre , is a warship originally built for the United States Navy during WWII.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) targeted a Yemeni fuel depot and port on Saturday in a strike attack responding to Houthi rebel attacks on Israel over the past months. The strike is Israel’s first retaliation in Yemen following an attack on Tel Aviv by a Houthi drone which killed one person and injured 10 others. Al-Masirah, a news media outlet controlled by the Houthi, reported on the Israeli strike on Saturday.

Utah officials declared on Saturday that they switched the execution method for death row inmate Taberon Dave Honie from an experimental three-drug lethal injection to a well-known single-drug injection, according to The Salt Lake Tribute. Honie was convicted and sentenced to death in 1999 for murdering Claudia Benn, the mother of his girlfriend at the time.
