The Superior Court of Los Angeles County experienced a ransomware attack on Friday, leading to the shutdown of the court’s internal computer systems. The systems will remain offline through the weekend as efforts to address the issue continue. Upon detecting the ransomware attack, the Superior Court disabled its network systems to prevent further damage.

I have long been critical of the erosion of free speech in Italy and other Western European countries, including the use of criminal libel laws against critics of the police or government. This week a Milan court has ordered a journalist to pay Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni damages of 5,000 euros ($5,465) for making fun of her in a social media post.

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Kenya condemned the excessive use of force by the police during the recent wave of anti-government protests in the country. The CSOs called for government accountability in law enforcement and the budget-making process. Through the joint statement published on Saturday, the CSOs denied allegations by the Kenyan authorities of funding the recent protests that were infiltrated by goons who looted shops and destroyed goods.

The Mercury News is reporting that former Supreme Court Justice Edward Panelli has died. The report includes an extended obituary that begins, “Justice Edward Panelli, who rose from a hardscrabble childhood in Depression-era Santa Clara Valley to the state’s highest court, died Saturday evening in Saratoga at the age of 92.” Justice Panelli was appointed by Governor George Deukmejian and served on the court from December 1985 until January 1994.

The French region of La Rochelle witnessed clashes between protesters and police on Saturday, amidst demonstrations against new irrigation reservoirs being built. The protests, attended by around 2,000 people, turned turbulent when police intervened, responding with tear gas as some protesters threw objects. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a new bill into law on Sunday amending the pension system in South Africa. The Pension Funds Amendment Bill enables the implementation of the new two-pot system “geared towards bolstering retirement savings.” The bill amends the Pension Funds Act, the Post and Telecommunications-Related Matters Act, the Transnet Pension Fund Act and the Government Employees Pension Law to implement this new pension system.
