Senior US District Judge Roger T. Benitez declared Califonia’s assault weapon ban unconstitutional on Thursday because it violates the right to bear arms enumerated in the US Constitution’s Second Amendment. The case is in the US District Court for the Southern District of California. The California law makes it a felony to manufacture, distribute, import, keep for sale or lend assault weapons.

Crime predictions generated for the police department in Plainfield, New Jersey, rarely lined up with reported crimes, an analysis by The Markup has found, adding new context to the debate over the efficacy of crime prediction software. Pakistan’s Islamabad High Court granted on Thursday former three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif protective bail, according to local media Pakistan Today. The protective bail restrains authorities from arresting Sharif until he appears before court on October 24. Sharif was removed from government and sentenced to 14 years prison over corruption charges in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

The UK Commons Foreign Affairs Committee (FAC) published a report Thursday finding that the FCDO failed to protect UK national Matthew Hedges from torture in United Arab Emirates. This comes following a similar Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s verdict issued on August 3. The Foreign Affairs Committee’s report draws on the findings of the Parliamentary Ombudsman’s investigation into the provision of consular support to Matthew Hedges, who was arbitrarily detained.
