Tunisia court sentences 4 women for buying election endorsement signatures

A Tunisian court on Friday sentenced four women to jail after they were convicted of buying endorsement signatures for a potential rival to President Kais Saied in the upcoming presidential elections. The Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance of Jendouba sentenced three women to two years in prison and a fourth woman, who is currently on the run, to four years in prison.

On Friday, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin rejected a controversial plea deal that would have prevented three alleged 9/11 terror attack planners from facing the death penalty. Earlier this week, a letter to the families of 9/11 victims revealed that alleged co-conspirators Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, Walid Bin ‘Attash, and Mustafa al Hawsawi had pled guilty to orchestrating the attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives on September 11, 2001.

US Senate approves bill adding 66 federal judgeships over next decade

The US Senate unanimously passed a bill on Thursday that adds 66 judgeships for federal district courts over a decade, starting on January 21, 2025. The Senate passed the JUDGES Act of 2024 on its findings that “[b]y the end of fiscal year 2022, [US district court filings] had increased by 30 percent since [1990]” and “[a]s of March 31, 2023, there were 686,797 pending cases in the [US district courts], with an average of 491 weighted case filings per judgeship [annually].̶
