US book publishers sue Florida Department of Education over library restrictions

Six major book publishers Friday sued the Florida Department of Education, challenging a 2023 state law used to restrict books in school libraries. The six book publishers filed the lawsuit along with the Authors Guild, several prominent authors, two students and two parents. The plaintiffs are suing on the basis that the state law is overbroad and violates the freedom of expression protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

The state of Florida on Thursday executed Loran Cole, a 57-year-old Florida man who contended that lethal injection would cause him “needless pain and suffering” due to his Parkinson’s disease.
