A New York appeals court ruled that a New York City law granting non-citizens the power to vote was unconstitutional. It was estimated that the law would allow more than 800,000 non-citizens the ability to vote in New York City local elections, prior to the court’s Wednesday ruling. The municipal legislation, Int. 1867-2020, was enacted in January of last year.

I was deeply saddened to learn this week of the death of Lew Rose , a visionary in the early days of the internet who was one of the very first lawyers to create a website and who went on to an illustrious career in advertising and consumer law, capped by his six-year tenure as managing partner of the law firm Kelley Drye. I once wrote a post about the first law firm to launch a website — a distinction I gave to Venable , which debuted its site in 1994.

A Texas judge ruled in favor of Barbers Hill Independent School District on Thursday, finding that the school district did not violate a new state law prohibiting race-based hair discrimination when it punished a black student for refusing to change his hairstyle. The case involved Darryl George , a junior in high school, who was initially punished in August 2023 after being told that his dreadlocks violated a policy that limited the length of boys’ hair.

Federal prosecutors indicted freelance journalist Tim Burke on Thursday for allegedly illegally accessing computer servers of several media companies. According to Burke’s indictment, in February 2023, Burke entered into a conspiracy with an unnamed co-conspirator to access private servers owned by the National Sports League (NSL), as well as the company StreamCo Inc., which provides commercial video streaming services to television networks, and two unnamed television and radio networks.

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) released a report Friday of thousands of incidents of human rights abuses it says have occurred during the ongoing conflict in Sudan, including attacks by militias in densely populated civilian areas, mass graves and widespread sexual violence. A Massachusetts federal judge sentenced a Texas man to serve three months in federal prison on Thursday for threatening a Boston, Massachusetts doctor affiliated with the national LGBTQIA+ health education center. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Matthew Jordan Lindner’s sentence after he previously pleaded guilty to one count of interstate transmission of threatening communication in December 2023.

The Sindh High Court issued a directive on Wednesday to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to restore access to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) which has been blocked by the orders of PTA since February 17, 2024. A court in Austria convicted former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Friday for giving false evidence to Parliament while testifying. Magistrate Bernhard Bonelli, Kurz’s former head of cabinet, was also found guilty in the case on one of the four charges against him. Judge Michael Radasztics gave Kurz a suspended sentence of eight months in prison and Bonelli a suspended sentence of six months.
