UK Supreme Court rules that AI cannot be an ‘inventor’ under Patents Act

The UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled Wednesday that an “inventor” under the Patents Act 1977 must be a “natural person” and not artificial intelligence (AI). The Supreme Court heard the landmark appeal, Thaler v Comptroller-General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks [2023] , after it was initially dismissed in the High Court and Court of Appeal in 2021.

New York City bans solitary confinement in jails as inhumane punishment

The New York City Council moved to largely ban solitary confinement in city jails in a 39-7 vote Wednesday and also added new restrictions on other safety management tactics. Design patent D990,096 is a rather strange patent entitled “Elf Hand.” The design looks like a prickly glove with four claws on the end of a round dowel. It is not very appealing. The listed prior art includes a backscratcher, so maybe that is what this is for.
