Morocco court sentences journalist to 18 months for defaming justice minister

The Moroccan Rabat Court of First Instance sentenced journalist Hamid El Mahdaoui on Monday to 18 months in prison for defamation against Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahb. The verdict also includes a civil compensation of approximately USD$150,000 to the justice minister. The verdict follows a lawsuit filed in October by Justice Minister and former Secretary-General of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), Abdellatif Ouahbi.

California voters reject ballot measure banning forced prison labor

California announced on Sunday the unofficial result that voters in the state rejected Proposition 6, which would have amended the Constitution of California to ban state prisons from forcing inmates to work. Currently, if prisoners refuse to work, it is legal for prisons to impose disciplinary measures. The ballot measure was rejected by a margin of 53.8 percent to 46.2 percent during the general election on November 5th.

New Zealand to criminalize stalking in response to community concerns

The New Zealand government announced on Monday that new legislation will be introduced to criminalize stalking by the end of the year. A conviction will see offenders facing up to 5 years in prison. Stalking is currently not a crime under New Zealand’s Crimes Act 1961. With the introduction of the amendment, stalking will be defined to capture three acts within the span of 12 months that fall under a list of captured behaviours.
