Nicaragua shuts down Catholic radio station amid NGO ‘foreign agent’ crackdown

Nicaragua on Tuesday ordered the closure and seizure of assets of Radio Maria, a Catholic radio station run by prominent government critic Bishop Rolando Alvarez. Alvarez was exiled to the Vatican after being released from house arrest on treason charges. The decision by the interior ministry was announced via the government’s official gazette. Taking full effect, it deprives the radio and 12 other mostly religious NGOs of their legal personalities.

A report detailing significant human rights violations caused by the Taliban’s “moral oversight” on Wednesday was released by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Enclosed within the report was a comprehensive review of policy settings implemented by the de facto Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (MPVPV) which the UNAMA found to have negatively affected the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Afghans.

Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday that a Saudi Arabia court sentenced 47-year-old Saudi teacher Asaad al-Ghamdi to 20 years in prison over charges relating to his social media activity.
