The ICJ unanimously decided to allow seven states to intervene in the ongoing genocide case brought by The Gambia against Myanmar on Wednesday. The countries granted permission to participate in the proceedings are Maldives, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. The court found their declarations of intervention admissible under Article 63 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice.

Australia’s Human Rights Law Centre published a report on Wednesday finding that the ability to protest in Australia has been eroded by anti-protest legislation over the last two decades. The report, entitled Protest in Peril: Our Shrinking Democracy, analysed and compiled every bill which affected protests in each Australian jurisdiction over the last 20 years and found that 49 laws inhibiting protests have been enacted by federal, state and territory parliaments.

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday, granted bail to Javed Gulam Nabi Shaikh, who has been held in custody for four years without trial under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Justices J B Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan criticized the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for delaying the framing of charges against Shaikh. The court was considering an appeal filed by the defendant challenging a Bombay High Court decision in February 2024 that denied their request for bail.

The Supreme Court of Japan ordered the Japanese government to compensate victims of forced sterilization after holding that the now-defunct Eugenic Protection Law was unconstitutional. The decision was a unified decision on five different appeals from Tokyo , Sendai , Sapporo , and Osaka.
