NYC Lawmakers Introduce ‘Crime-Free’ Bill Mocking City ‘Gun-Free’ Zones

New York City Council’s Minority Leader, Joe Borelli (R-Staten Island), introduced a bill on Wednesday that would designate Times Square a “crime-free” zone. The proposed legislation was filed in response to a local law introduced in August by City Council Democrats that, after it was enacted, designated Times Square a “sensitive area” under state law and restricted concealed firearms in the tourist hot spot. .

Ohio Governor signs legislation preventing discrimination in caregiving on the basis of disability

Ohio Governor Mark DeWine Monday signed Senate Bill 202 , which prohibits authorities from denying or limiting participation in parenting activities on the sole basis of disability. The law applies to custody and visitation rights, adopting, foster care and guardianships. While the right to these activities is not guaranteed for individuals with disabilities, disability alone cannot preclude someone from participating in caregiving.

Thus, no patents for invention wholly conceived by artificial intelligence. Thaler v. Vidal , 43 F.4th 1207 (Fed. Cir. 2022). Thaler’s petition for writ of certiorari to the US Supreme Court would have been due last week, but Thaler was able to obtain an extension with the petition now being due March 19, 2023.

Uganda Constitutional Court declares controversial section of communications law void

The Ugandan Constitutional Court Tuesday declared a section of the Computer Misuse Act , No. 2 of 2011 void with enforcement banned. Section 25 of the act prohibited any person from “willfully and repeatedly [using] electronic communication to disturb or attempt to disturb the peace, quiet or right of privacy of any person with no purpose of legitimate communication.” The petitioners claimed section 25 was overly vague and limited free speech.

The Copyright Royalty Board yesterday published in the Federal Register the proposed rates for the public performance of musical compositions by noncommercial broadcasters for the period 2023 through 2027. The rates reflect settlements between ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and GMR with various organizations representing noncommercial broadcasters. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting agreed to one set of rates paid to cover NPR and PBS affiliates.
