Check the list of the ten men most recently exonerated in Massachusetts. All but one was wrongfully convicted in Suffolk County. (Boston and adjacent cities.) All but one is Black. All were sentenced to life in prison. Most were sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. Succinct accounts of each of their cases are available through links maintained by the National Registry of Exonerations.

On January 21, 1990, Jesperson killed 23-year-old Taunja Bennett after meeting her at the B&I Tavern in Portland, Oregon. The New York State Senate Tuesday passed the Tropical Deforestation-Free Procurement Act , a bill aimed at protecting tropical rainforests and human rights in other countries through state government relations with contractors. The bill will require state contractors who work with commodities derived from rainforests to certify that their products are not contributing to deforestation or degradation.

Afghan women Saturday marched in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul to urge the UN not to formally recognize the Taliban government at a UN summit scheduled for next week. Approximately two dozen women took to the streets despite the Taliban government’s increasingly strict crackdowns on women. During the march, protesters chanted that they would fight and die for their rights and condemned the UN, stating that the recognition of the Taliban would be a violation of women’s rights.

The court’s denial of review in Brown v. Louisiana came at the end of a list of orders from the justices’ private conference last week.

O n Monday, April 17, 2023, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit handed down a decision in California Restaurant Association v. City of Berkeley. The court overturned a District Court ruling to invalidate a Berkeley, California, prohibition on natural gas infrastructure in newly-constructed buildings. Berkeley’s so-called “natural gas ban” was the first local ordinance in the country to effectively require all-electric construction of new buildings.
