Ukraine President Zelensky signs decree creating unified national news source

Citing martial law, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Sunday signed a decree combining all national tv channels into one platform in accordance with the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council’s decision to implement a “unified information policy.” Around-the-clock information will run on the consolidated platform called “United News.” The decree also provides that privately-owned media companies shall remain suspended.

The surge in violent crime in the U.S. underlines a “dark new form of American exceptionalism,” suggests New York Times columnist David Leonhardt. Leonhardt noted that over the past weekend alone, there were at least nine “mass shooting” events in which four or more people were impacted by gun violence. The largest event in terms of casualties was the shooting at a car show in Dumas, Ark., which left one dead and 27 injured in “collateral” damage from a gunfight involving two people.

DC trial court dismisses Amazon antitrust lawsuit

The Superior Court of the District of Columbia Friday dismissed a lawsuit brought by DC Attorney General Karl Racine against Amazon for violating the District of Columbia Antitrust Act. Judge Hiram Puig-Lugo granted the motion to dismiss. Racine filed suit in May of 2021 on behalf of the District. The complaint alleged that Amazon’s pricing agreements imposed on third-party sellers were anticompetitive and allowed Amazon to maintain an illegal monopoly.

The Boom in Carbon Capture and Storage – Another Source of Revenue for Texas Landowners

Talos Energy announced that it has signed a lease with the Texas General Land Office for more than 40,000 acres offshore to store CO2 captured from industrial sites along the coast. Talos said it is capable of storing up to 275 million metric tons of Co2 and is “the first ever major offshore carbon sequestration site” in the U.S.” Talos is also planning a CCS site along the Mississippi River with a capacity to store 500 million metric tons of CO2.

UN reports over 2100 civilian casualties in Ukraine

The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) posted an update Friday noting over 2100 civilian casualties in Ukraine. Since the start of hostilities on February 24, OHCHR has verified 816 civilians were killed and 1333 injured. The death toll includes 59 children, while 74 children were injured in the fighting. 903 of the casualties occurred in Donetsk and Luhansk, two regions in southeastern Ukraine controlled by separatists and recognized as independent by Russia.

Construction of Amazon HQ in South Africa halted by court

South Africa’s Western Cape Division of the High Court Wednesday halted the construction of Amazon’s new Africa headquarters and ordered the developer to consult with local indigenous people who say the site is on sacred land.
