The UK, the US and Canada announced coordinated sanctions on Friday against individuals and entities linked to human rights abuse, approaching the 75th anniversary of the ratification of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The US Supreme Court refused to block Illinois’ assault weapon and high-capacity magazine ban on Thursday. This decision comes after the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit allowed the ban to go into effect in November. In a one-page order the Supreme Court stated, “The application for a writ of injunction pending certiorari presented to Justice Barrett and by her referred to the Court is denied.” The court also declined to block the ban in May.

A federal report released in September found that there were 188 school shootings during the 2021-22 academic year, the highest in more than two decades. National Center for Education Statistics report authors noted that there were half that number of school shootings (93) during the previous year and that, after retail and other business settings, educational settings were the second most common location of active shooter incidents.
