The City of San Francisco Tuesday reached a $58 million settlement with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and AbbVie’s Allergan unit over claims that the companies fueled an opioid epidemic in the city. A new set of algorithms, created by members of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Idaho Justice Project and the University of Pennsylvania, aims to assess the likelihood of defendants being mistreated in court, reports Government Technology. The tool considers details that ought to be immaterial to the ruling — such as the judge’s and defendant’s gender and race — and then predicts how likely the judge is to award an unusually long sentence.

This prompted the question for me: who actually files appeals in patent infringement cases and how representative are they of the underlying civil actions filed in the courts? It turns out that the answer is “mostly patent asserters” and that they aren’t necessarily representative of case filings.

Former CIA Agent Joshua Schulte was convicted on espionage charges in federal court Wednesday for providing national defense information to the website Wikileaks. Schulte was charged in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York back in 2018 with a 13 count superseding indictment which included espionage charges, child pornography charges, and a copyright infringement charge, among others.

A report released this week by the Texas A&M University Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center and Texas Prisons Community Advocates has found that many inmates fear dying or falling gravely ill from the increasingly hot Texas weather and believe actions taken by officials to mitigate the dangerous conditions continue to fall short, KWTX reports. Advocates have been highly critical of the lack of air conditioning in the Texas prison system, which has 120,000 inmates.
