As a solo myself, I can tell you that there is much to be said for practicing on your own – freedom and independence not least among them. In fact, during 2022’s “Great Resignation,” a third of lawyers who quit their jobs did so to start their own solo practices, according to Legal Trends for Solo Law Firms , a report published today by law practice management company Clio.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s spokesperson announced Tuesday that Russian authorities opened a criminal case against Navalny for removing another prisoner from his cell. Navalny’s team called the situation a “provocation” and said that Navalny was previously warned about a potential set-up. The American Bar Association said last night that an unauthorized hacker gained access to the ABA network and may have acquired usernames and salted and hashed passwords that members would have used to access a prior version of the website. In a statement, the ABA said: “On March 17, 2023, the ABA observed unusual activity on its network. The association immediately activated its incident response plan and retained outside cybersecurity experts to assist with the investigation.

Tunisia Police Tuesday shut down the Ennahdha offices, operating headquarters for Tunisia’s Islamist-inspired opposition party. The move came a day after police arrested Rached Ghannouchi, Ennahdha’s party leader, at his residence in Tunis, Tunisia–the nation’s capital. Ennahdha announced that investigators had raided the office headquarters in Tunis on Tuesday.

O n Monday, April 17, 2023, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit handed down a decision in California Restaurant Association v. City of Berkeley. The court overturned a District Court ruling to invalidate a Berkeley, California, prohibition on natural gas infrastructure in newly-constructed buildings. Berkeley’s so-called “natural gas ban” was the first local ordinance in the country to effectively require all-electric construction of new buildings.

Cordero-Garcia , the justices sought to define the contours of an “offense relating to the obstruction of justice,” which is one among the prior convictions that subjects noncitizens to mandatory removal from the United States as an “aggravated felony.” The court agreed to hear the case to decide whether a conviction qualifies as such an offense only if it has a connection to an already-pending investigation or proceeding.

The Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Saturday announced that they are prepared to return a group of captured Egyptian soldiers who were conducting training exercises in northern Sudan. The RSF stated that they will cooperate in returning the soldiers who “surrendered without resistance” in Merowe, located between the Sudanese capital Khartoum and Sudan’s border with Egypt, amid fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese army.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Thursday signed a bill into law that allows juries to recommend the death penalty without unanimous consent. For a jury to recommend the death penalty under Florida law, the jury must unanimously confirm there was an “aggravating factor” present to warrant capital punishment. Aggravating factors include if the crime was especially cruel or heinous, if it was committed for money, or if the victim was under the age of 12, among others.
