Thousands of anti-war protesters arrested in Russia

OVD-Info, a Russian independent human rights group, reported Monday that around 5,000 anti-war protesters were arrested across 69 cities in Russia on Sunday. As of Tuesday, more than 5,292 people are detained by Russian authorities in 74 cities. OVD-Info is a Russian independent human rights media project. The group launched in 2011 in an effort to raise awareness of and fight political persecutions in Russia.

Spain parliament approves independent investigation into Catholic Church sexual abuse cases

The Spanish Parliament voted Thursday overwhelmingly in favor of a proposal to create an independent commission to investigate alleged Catholic Church sexual abuses of minors. Spain’s ombudsperson is set to chair the commission. The final vote count consisted of 286 votes in favor, 51 votes against and two abstentions. Spain’s Catholic Church has been under investigation on multiple fronts since a report from El Pais newspaper revealed 1,237 cases of sexual abuse within the church.
