The US Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Monday in Siegle v. Fitzgerald and United States v. Washington. In Siegle , the Court is considering whether the 2017 Amendment to the Bankruptcy Judgeship Act, which increased quarterly fees for Chapter 11 cases in the Trustee program but not the Bankruptcy Administrator program, violates the uniformity requirement of the Constitution’s Bankruptcy Clause.

In an 8-1 decision, the US Supreme Court Thursday ruled that Congress does not have to provide Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits to residents of Puerto Rico. The decision impacts the residents of Puerto Rico and other US territories who are applying for government benefits. In United States v. Vaello-Madero , Jose Luis Vaello-Madero, a US citizen who lives in Puerto Rico, argued that the law violated his right to equal protection.

I recently took a two-week vacation: 11 days in Hawaii. It was amazing. It was the perfect balance of activity, relaxation and adventure. What struck me most, though, was when I returned home. On the night before returning to work and clients, I thought: “I am so excited to go to work tomorrow, to meet with clients!” It made me realize that it had been a really long time since I felt excited about going to work the next day.

Recent debates on trans rights have focused on public restrooms and Ivy League swimming pools. But earlier this year, Texas attorney general Ken Paxton opened up a new battleground: the home. In February, Paxton issued a non-binding legal opinion stating that transgender therapy for minor children constitutes child abuse. A few days later, the governor of Texas ordered the state’s Child Protective Services (CPS) to investigate families whose children are in transgender therapy.

The US Supreme Court Wednesday heard an oral arguments for Vega v. Tekoh. The case will determine whether a person can seek civil relief when an officer fails to provide them with their Miranda rights, legal protections for potential criminal defendants against self-incrimination. Terence Tekoh was employed as nursing assistant at a Los Angeles medical center when he was accused of sexually assaulting a heavily sedated patient.

The United Kingdom’s Westminster Magistrates’ court Wednesday formally ruled that the power to extradite Julian Assange to the US lies with UK Home Secretary Priti Patel. Patel will decide whether Assange will be extradited to the US for prosecution. Starting in 2012, Assange spent seven years at the Ecuadorean embassy in London to avoid being tried for sexual assault in Sweden.

A funny thing happened on the way to oral argument: The state of Washington modified the 2018 workers’ compensation law at the center of the case, raising the prospect that there is no longer a live dispute for the justices to resolve.
