ACLU files lawsuit challenging new Georgia legislative maps

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on Thursday filed a lawsuit in Georgia, claiming that the state’s newly-drawn state House and Senate districts disadvantage Black voters. The complaint notes that Georgia is one of the fastest growing states in the nation, with much of that growth driven by an increase in the Black population which has grown 16% over the last ten years.

Tigray migrants detained in Ethiopia face atrocities, Human Rights Watch reports

Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported Wednesday that thousands of ethnic Tigrayans have been deported from Saudi Arabia and abused by Ethiopian authorities upon their return. Tigray, a northern region of Ethiopia, has been a center of conflict for years. According to the New York Times , the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) “dominated” Ethiopian politics for almost 30 years.

UNHCR in Jordan announces few Syrian refugees returned to Syria in 2021

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Jordan announced in a press conference with Jordanian media Sunday that 5,500 Syrian refugees had left Jordan and returned to Syria in 2021, a small fraction of the total number of Syrian refugees living in Jordan. The UNHCR stated that while many more wished to return to Syria in 2021, they were unable to do so because of continued violence and instability due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Judge Reed O’Connor of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas temporarily enjoined the United States Navy’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy on Monday. In August 2021, the Department of Defense (DOD) mandated COVID-19 vaccinations for all service members. The Navy issued its own mandate requiring all active-duty service members to be fully vaccinated before November 28, 2021.

On Friday, Morgan Stanley agreed to pay $60 million as a preliminary settlement of a class action lawsuit brought against it for allegedly failing to secure customers’ personal data before retiring old information technology, Reuters reported.
