Iowa lawmakers passed a bill on Tuesday that would make it a crime to enter the state after being deported or denied entry into the US. Additionally, the individual must leave the state within 72 hours following conviction or release from custody, with subsequent offenses classified as felonies, punishable by up to two years in prison, a fine of up to $1,000 or both. Iowa also passed a similar law in March.
Civil rights groups filed a complaint on Thursday against Iowa state officials to stop the state’s recently enacted immigration law from going into effect on July 1. The law makes it a crime for a foreign national to enter Iowa after having been deported from the US in the past, regardless of current immigration status.
