An Illinois federal judge on Tuesday cut a jury's award of $100 million in punitive damages to Atturo Tire Corp. in a dispute with rival Toyo Tire to just $100,000, saying the conduct "was not extreme" enough to warrant such a large finding, but kept intact the jury's $10 million compensatory damages award.

But the college continued to drag out the appeal in what seemed like a revenge litigation against a store that refused to give up simply because it was innocent.

If a full and effective retraction is issued (and published as prominently as the offending statement), it can limit damages or bar punitive damages entirely in some states. States differ on the impact of retractions, which must be made within a set period of days or weeks. It shows an affirmative decision to stand by the story.
