As noted, the painting later spent time in California, Missouri, and New York. The Restatement (Second) of Conflict of Laws makes this point explicitly.

Missouri does not appear to have a formal retraction law, but it is still considered a necessary step. If a full and effective retraction is issued (and published as prominently as the offending statement), it can limit damages or bar punitive damages entirely in some states. It shows an affirmative decision to stand by the story.

Missouri man appeals death sentence after attorneys failed to press jury foreman’s bias

Missouri resident Lance Shockley crashed a pick-up truck belonging to his sister-in-laws fianc into a ditch. The Missouri Supreme Court ultimately rejected Shockleys claim, but one judge dissented from that decision, writing that Shockley was entitled to a new trial. The state urges the justices to stay out of the dispute.
