US unseals war crimes indictment against former Syrian officials

The US government unsealed an indictment Monday charging two former high-ranking officials of the Syrian Air Force Intelligence with war crimes. The indictment accuses Jamil Hassan and Abdul Salam Mahmoud of cruel and inhuman treatment, including the torture of detainees, some of whom were US citizens, at the Mezzeh military airbase prison in Damascus, Syria.

CALS Earns 5-year Renewal of Accreditation

In April 2024, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) conducted a comprehensive site visit of Center for Advanced Legal Studies (CALS) as part of the renewal of accreditation efforts started in 2023. The site visit team provided CALS staff with very positive feedback during their exit interview, with only three recommendations for improvement.

Brazil court sentences three officers for asphyxiation death of Black man in tear gas-filled trunk

The Public Ministry of Sergipe announced Saturday that three former police officers have been sentenced to long prison terms for the death of Genivaldo de Jesus Santos, a black man with schizophrenia, in 2022. Judge Rafael Soares of the 7th Federal Court in the Brazilian state of Sergipe sentenced them to between 23 and 28 years in prison. The officers, who were members of the Federal Highway Police (PRF), received individual sentences based on their roles in the crime.
